The AI art generator, which was developed in collaboration with Meta, enables users to create four pictures that can be licensed for use. To address concerns raised by artists and photographers, Shutterstock has implemented a “contributor fund” that compensates artists for their contributions to training Shutterstock’s generative AI models. Additionally, Shutterstock maintains ongoing royalties tied to licensing for newly-generated assets, ensuring that artists receive proper recognition and compensation for their work. The use of copyrighted images in training AI models has become a contentious issue, leading to legal disputes between generative AI startups and stock image galleries.

In May, artificial intelligence pioneer Geoffrey Hinton resigned from his position at Google to be able to freely express his concerns about how AI could negatively impact the world. The project in question was an artificial intelligence system that could generate realistic images of people, places, and things, and Shutterstock planned to use it to create millions of new stock photos. Earlier this year, the creators of AI art tool Stable Diffusion from Stability AI were sued by Getty Images for allegedly plagiarizing their content. Another lawsuit involves a group of artists accusing Stability AI together with an AI art creation platform, Midjourney, of violating copyright law by training on their internet-based work without permission. Then, in January, Shutterstock allowed Meta to use its stock datasets to “develop, train and evaluate its machine learning capabilities,” and launched its own AI image generator in January. This was in stark contrast to its competitor Getty Images, which sued Stability AI, the creator of the open-source text-to-image generator Stable Diffusion, for copyright infringement in February. “One of the biggest things that our customers have wanted from us is the same commercial licensing confidence that they get for other Shutterstock content,” Jeff Cunning, VP of product at Shutterstock, told VentureBeat in a video interview.
